10 Thoughts On Picking a Cruise Ship Cabin

The best advice is to be informed about cabins and pick the
right cabin for you among the thousands available on a cruise
ship.

1. One of the most difficult parts of planning for a cruise is
choosing the right cabin. Everyone has different tastes, and
what is not important to one person might well be important to
you.

2. Look at the cruise ship layout and decks online or in
brochures. Know that there are different types of cabins on
different cruise ships. The biggest differences between cruise
lines--mainstream and luxury--ships are the quality of
accommodations.

3. Sometimes there are over 20 different categories on a ship!
So it is important to know the different cabin categories. One
reason is that thanks to modern shipbuilding, most inside and
outside staterooms are standard in size and amenities. Comparing
one vessel's cabins against another is daunting task, so keep
your eye on the square footage as the most important criteria.

4. Know your budget and what you can afford. The price of a
cruise ship cabin or stateroom (the terms are interchangeable)
is dependent on its size, layout, and location. The cabins on
large cruise ships come in standard, ocean view, balcony, and
suite. A luxury line's smallest cabins are much larger than
those on large cruise lines and are either ocean view or
balconied.

5. Know your lifestyle. Price is certainly a consideration,
but if your vacation time is limited, you might be willing to
pay more to get a cabin better suited to your lifestyle. It's a
personal decision, much like deciding where to cruise and which
ship to cruise on. How about an outside cabin with a window, or
better yet a balcony? How about sitting on the balcony with a
good book or using it to catch a breathe of sea air?

6. The right cabin is a retreat house after a busy day ashore,
or just to get away. A long cruise will have you wanting to
spend a relaxing time in your room, watching a TV-movie, or
taking a nap.

7. Lots of people recommend the cheapest inside cabin, because
you won't be spending much time in there anyway. This might be
true for short trips, but are you prepared for an inside cabin
on the lowest level.

8. Know your location. Cabin, balcony size, and cabin location
vary significantly within the same price range on any ship.

9. There's lot of cruise industry jargon you have to decipher.

10. Yes, there are the obvious questions you should ask: Will I
located below the water line? Will I hear the roar of the ships
engines from my cabin? Will I have enough room to turn around in
my cabin? Will it be the size of a walk-in closet, with no
windows, a tiny bath, and bunk beds? Will I not be able to tell
if it's day or night without going up several decks?

Explore what the different types of cabins are, which locations
are the most desirable, and which locations you should avoid if
possible. Pick the right accommodations and you'll have a
wonderful time, and get hooked on cruising.

Celebrity Cruise! Opulence Perfectly Staged

Each generation of Celebrity ships has emerged to assume a leadership role in the cruise industry. From the contemporary elegance of Horizon to the stylish and high-tech Century, to the latest epoch, Constellation, Infinity, Millennium and Summit, all are five-star vessels of incomparable allure. In true Celebrity style every conceivable luxury awaits you. Every stateroom is a sanctuary; culinary standards are impeccable, entertainment a masterpiece!

There’s poetry to be found in the perfect symmetry of grace and strength, which is the hallmark of Celebrity’s trim, powerful ships. The ships are designed for your complete fulfillment and beauty is in every detail. In every painting and sculpture, in foyers so grand they resemble Venetian courtyards, in the exotic fabrics tinted to rich jewel tone colors, in the handsome accommodation, and in the sophisticated restaurants and stylish lounges and bars. Polished mahogany, etched glass, soft leather and crisp linen harmonize with immaculately maintained public areas and perfectly prepared staterooms.

Celebrity's Fleet

No matter which ship you choose, on every Celebrity cruise you will visit enchanting destinations- starting with your ship itself. Ranging in size from approximately 47,000 tons (Horizon, Zenith) right up to 91,000 tons (Millennium, Constellation, Infinity, and Summit) Celebrity offers greater facilities and more accommodation with verandas than ever before. In fact, we'd say the facilities are nothing short of dazzling. For example, the ethereal Olympic Restaurant on Millennium has the intricate, original walnut paneling from White Star Line's ship, the RMS Olympic, covering the walls.

The Atmosphere

La dolce vita. Park Avenue elegance. Softly glowing chandeliers. Soothing music. The art of flambé, Aromatic stones, and exotic jasmine flower baths in the spa. A world where all that you wish for is anticipated and all that you expect is exceeded. Imagine one of the most romantic nights of your life, and then multiply it by the length of your Celebrity cruise.

The Service

Grace and civility are not entirely of the past. Expect seamless, professional, sensitive care from ultra-accommodating staff whose adept handling of the minuscule details are the very definition of unobtrusive blue ribbon service. European-trained dining room personnel are to be particularly admired and you can count on the sommelier to provide the perfect cabernet to accompany your chateaubriand.

Accommodations

Suites, Celebrity Suites, Sky Suites with veranda, Premium and Deluxe Ocean-view staterooms with veranda, Ocean-view staterooms, Family Ocean-view staterooms, (last year Ocean-view Celebrity Concierge Class was introduced), and Inside Staterooms. Penthouse suites have both a rotunda and vestibule entrances and is among the largest suites at sea (with a baby grand piano if you can imagine)!

Naturally bedding varies dependent upon category, although all staterooms have two lower twin beds or a queen-size bed, TV, direct-dial phone and voice mail; individual safe, hair dryer, thermostat-controlled air conditioning, 100% cotton towels, complimentary use of bathrobes, complimentary 24-hour room service, a mini-bar (contents not included). The suites, of course, are unsurpassed 5-star quality, some arriving with the luxury of 24-hour butler service to anticipate your needs from afternoon tea to evening hors d'oeuvres to full in-suite breakfast, lunch and dinner service in some categories.

Dependent upon which suite you select, additional amenities can include priority check-in and departure, express luggage delivery on boarding, welcome champagne, dining room seating preference, opportunity to book massages in-suite, a personal computer, printer and internet access, personalized stationery, Celebrity tote bag, oversized bath towels, complimentary use of robes. The Celebrity Network offers an advanced in-room entertainment and information centre where a two-way, user-friendly communications link allows you to view and select shore excursions, order room service and indulge in casino gambling from the comfort of your stateroom.

The Dining

In an environment of consummate charm graced with the very best in china, silver, newly pressed white linens and crystal, delicious repasts from world-renowned chef, Michel Roux are exquisitely presented in fetching main dining rooms. Celebrity's pre-eminent cuisine reflects their dedication to providing all guests, including those with particularly educated and discriminating palates, with the finest food that land and sea has to offer.

Cuisine is as wholesome as it is imaginative. Every dish is prepared using only the freshest herbs and ingredients, and even breads and sorbets are made from scratch. In addition there's a wonderful variety of lean and light, vegetarian and special children's selections. On occasion, perhaps you'd enjoy a more casual dining experience, in which case you would have the choice of a specialty restaurant, grill or café where the selection is every bit as tempting as that served in the posh restaurants.

The artistry and culinary talents of Celebrity's chefs are also shown to great advantage at theme buffets. On special nights, you can look forward to "Gourmet Bites" a roving late night tour-de-force of succulent treats such as empanadas, mini-Beef Wellington and crispy fish tempura which is hand carried throughout the ship by tuxedoed, white-gloved wait staff. Just-baked scones and tea sandwiches are offered during an elegant afternoon tea service and you simply must have an espresso and warm, buttery croissant in the Cova Café Milano after your brisk morning walk on deck. The simple joy of a fresh gourmet pizza served in the privacy of your stateroom is another tasty option.

It is a source of pride to Celebrity that Michel Roux not only serves as culinary consultant to the line, he also selects the award-winning vintages that transform each meal into a not-to-be-forgotten event.

The Entertainment

As the sun melts into the sea, and the ship is in the spotlight of the moon, the night ignites with fun and frolic of all expressions to be had! Why not start with pre-dinner cocktails, caviar and pate at the Champagne Bar or Martini Bar. Over 20 variations on the martini theme include divine concoctions such as James Bond's "shaken not stirred", Caipirinha and chocolate kiss versions. Then on to dinner, followed by a plush seat in the theatre to enjoy a lavish Broadway-style production.

The rustle of cards at the blackjack tables and the ringing of slot machines paying off in Fortunes Casino will be hard to ignore, so pop in for a while (you never know). Then whisk off to one of the nightclubs for some all-night dancing, ending the evening with a nightcap at Michael's Club, or a moonlight serenade for two on the upper deck!
Entertainment can also take the form of art auctions, wine tasting and shopping in the smart boutiques for designer labels to mention just a few possibilities.

Programs for Kids and youth

Activities for children aged 3 to 17 are tiered into four age groups. ShipMates for ages 3-6; Celebrity Cadets for ages 7 to 10; Ensigns for ages 11-13; Admiral T's for teens 14 to 17. On Constellation and Millennium you can visit The Conservatory, a lovely garden environment inspired by the Emilio Robba flower boutiques in Paris. Always in the avant garde, Celebrity introduced the first cigar bar at sea, and in the warm, intimate milieu of Michael's Club you can sink into a leather chair and contemplate life while enjoying a fine hand-rolled cigar and a warm cognac. On Galaxy and Mercury, the Navigator Club offers a blend of celebration and elegance with opportunities for late night dancing and gazing through floor-to-ceiling windows.

Hawaii Vacations and Hawaii Family Vacations

Hawaii vacations can be exciting, but sometimes it’s necessary to get Hawaii family vacation tips to help vacationers get the most for their money for their Hawaii vacation time. Getting the most for your money can make a Hawaii vacation a vacation to remember. Even cheap Hawaii vacations can be compared to Hawaii luxury vacations when you take the time to plan ahead. Consider these tips when planning your Hawaii family vacations.

Hawaii has four large or major islands worthy of a visit during Hawaii family vacations. Each island is unique with interesting tourist attractions of its own. To visit all four islands within a two week period can leave a tourists tired with enjoyment passing them by. A good plan for your Hawaii vacation is to choose two or three islands to visit initially. The island of Oahu is the largest tourist attraction with museums, tourist activities, and shopping. Hawaii, or the big Island is great for site seeing and nature drives during Hawaii vacations. Maui is a slower pace with leisurely activities and Kauai is the quietest of the four islands.

Once you have decided which islands to visit during your Hawaii family vacation, you can also plan to visit the other island or islands for just a day. Inter-island flights allow you to enjoy a day's stay on an island without having to squeeze a hotel check in and stay into your itinerary. A great Hawaii vacation tip is to book your rental car at the same time that you book your flights. This can save you time and money, when looking for cheap Hawaii vacations.

There are free activities to be enjoyed on Hawaii family vacations. Hiking, Hawaiian performances, and other attractions can be cost free. Because of the tropical climate, these activities are available year-round. Perhaps the most memorable Hawaii family vacation attraction is the Arizona Memorial. Tickets are not available in advance, so it is advised that you arrive early to the Memorial and secure tickets. There are shuttles and taxi cabs that can take you to the Arizona Memorial.

The most important Hawaii family vacation tip is to plan in advance. Take time to discover where you will be staying and what your family will be interested in doing during your Hawaii vacation. Planning activities at the last minute or when you arrive wastes energy and limits your vacation time. You will want your Hawaii family vacation to be special, so the time spent planning ahead will be well worth it.

Seychelles- Sitting Pretty Among Top Beach Destinations

Almost every description of the Seychelles appears to be a bit over the top. Is it only the easily impressed who get to visit and write about the Seychelles? The magic of these islands is however real. Impressions gained of this dream island paradise will be your refuge when you return to those long working hours. Just like everybody imagines paradise, the Seychelles islands are far away, peaceful and stunningly beautiful.

It is the peace and quiet that attracted the writer Somerset Maugham when he sought to work on a novel without interruption. Most visitors do not however come here to work. The main draw of the islands has always been the beaches, snorkeling and diving. The attractions of the natural world particularly the birdlife, tropical fish and the unique physical environment are a bonus.

After your Seychelles holiday you may want to impress your friends by these two facts. The islands are the only mid ocean island group in the world with a granite rock formation. And that Aldabra, a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site is the largest coral atoll in the world. Some will of course not understand what you are talking about but the point will be clear that you have traveled to a place of distinction.

Jacques Costeau whose part of the documentary, The Silent World was shot in the Seychelles said that he had never been anywhere else with such clarity of water or diversity of reef life.

The islands are also a good place to get married and to enjoy the tropical honeymoon of your life. Few other destinations can beat the combination of beauty and romance. For this and other reasons I cannot go through here, It is my firmly held position that visitors who get married here go on to a happy married life and are sooner joined by cute little ones!

The Seychelles is a year round destination. But if you must undertake a specific activity, then you need to pick the most suitable season. Windsurfing and sailing are best at the start and end of the trade winds - May and October. Diving enthusiasts should go for dates between March and May or September to November, although conditions are excellent year round.

Those keen on the birdlife should note that April marks the beginning of the breeding season. Bird Island, in particular is overrun by sea birds between May and September. Due to drier conditions, the period May to September has best conditions for hiking and walking.

The other factor you may want to consider is cost. The Seychelles is considered to be a top-drawer destination. In general, the peak falls between mid December-early January and mid July-end August when most Seychelles hotels and resorts trade in the currency known as top-dollar. The off-season periods vary with each establishment much more widely than most other destinations.

The discount in designated off-season periods relative to the peak season falls between 20-60%. Some of the smaller premises however charge a uniform rate year round. If you have a flexible schedule, good planning can result in considerable savings.

Enjoy Your Next Cruise Without Gaining 10 Pounds

Lets face it, one of the joys of a cruise is the sumptuous world class food that is available everywhere and in great quantities. Needless to say, nearly anyone who has embarked on a cruise has come back a bit heavier, but that doesn’t have to be the case. There are many other amenities aboard every cruise ship that you can enjoy and still fit into your bathing suit at the end of the trip.

One key to not overeating is to simply only eat when you are hungry. Avoid the temptation to eat at every chance you get and ask yourself “Am I really that hungry”. If you are then go ahead and fill up, but if you are not, pass on the food or eat just a little bit or a piece of fruit.

Another thing to remember is that you do not have to sample everything on the buffet every night! If there are many things you would like to try, then pace yourself throughout the week. How about taking just a bite or two of that tempting dessert instead of eating two pieces? Those 2 bites will taste just as good as eating the whole thing and leave you feeling much lighter.

When eating at a buffet, try to fill your plate up with fruits and vegetables. This will be much healthier for you and leave you full of energy and ready to dance the night away!

If you do overeat, there’s plenty of opportunity to burn off those extra calories. Take full advantage of the exercise equipment on the ship and plan to get in a full workout each day. Walking the deck can be fun and also a great way to get in some exercise. When you are in the pool, swim a few laps instead of just floating. Take the stairs instead of elevator whenever possible.

Maximize Your Cruise Wardrobe With These Packing Tips

Cruises are a fun opportunity to dress up and look your best but how do you look fresh every day without bringing your whole closet?

The first thing you need to think about is what type of clothing you will need. Will you be attending fancy dinners or dressing casual the whole time? Is there a theme party you would like to attend? Will you be dancing until dawn in your best dance dress? Some of these may necessitate bringing special attire and you want to make sure you have room set aside in your luggage for this.

If you will be dressing for dinner, one way to stretch your cruise wardrobe is to coordinate separates. Stick to no more than 3 coordinating colors such as black, white and tan. This way you can bring 1 pair of slacks, 1 skirt, 2 nice shirts and 2 jackets and make them look like 8 brand new and fresh outfits by mixing up what piece you wear with what. For example, the slacks paired with shirt 1 and jacket 1 could be one outfit, substitute shirt 2 with the same slacks and jacket for a whole new look! Now substitute the skirt in and you get another whole new look! In addition, you can use scarves and accessories to give each outfit a whole new look.

The same method can be applied for your casual wear. If you stick to a coordinating color scheme, you can get more mileage out of each piece since it will tend to look different when it is paired with a different top or bottom.

Deciding which shoes to take is perhaps the hardest of all! If you are anything like me, you have a perfect pair for each outfit and you’ll want to take them all! Of course, you may not have room in those suitcases so you must be selective in what you bring. I suggest you wear your bulkiest shoes, like sneakers, onto the ship - this way the will not be taking up space in your luggage. Bring a dressy shoe and a more casual shoe as well. Make sure you think about color when you pack the shoes, if you are bringing only black dressy slacks then white sandals might not look so good!

Finally, to get more space in your suitcase for clothes, find out if the ship will be supplying beach towels and hair dryers. If they are then you can leave yours at home and free up some suitcase space for more clothes!

Travel tips for visitors to the UK

Travelling to a foreign country can sometimes be daunting, especially if it is your first trip. Travel guides are always very helpful but can sometimes miss the important little tips that will help to smooth your trip to the country of your choice. Here are some useful tips for travellers to the UK.

Currency and banking

UK currency is Pounds Sterling (£). 100 pence = 1 pound. The notes that are in circulation are £5, £10, £20 and £50 (although the latter are not often encountered). The coins are 1p, 2p (copper coins), 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p (silver coloured coins), £1 (gold coloured coin) and £2 (gold/silver coloured coin). The coins and notes all bear the Queen's head on the front. The notes have a famous person from history on the back. Scottish banks issue their own notes, these are usually accepted in the rest of the UK but smaller shops may refuse them - best to use them up whilst you are still north of the border but don't worry if you have some left when you get into England.

The slang term in common usage for a pound sterling is 'Quid'.The £5 note is often called a 'fiver' and the £10 note is a 'tenner'. Banks are open weekdays, usually from 9.30 to 4.30. More and more banks are now opening on Saturday mornings, especially in the larger towns and cities. Most banks have cash dispensers situated outside, be vigilant when using these as criminals sometimes tamper with these to get hold of your card details, it is better to use the ones inside. If the machine looks as if the card slot has been damaged, be a little wary. The Euro is not in common use but some of the larger stores will accept them.

Driving

You probably do not need telling that in the UK, you drive on the left. If you are hiring a car, getting one with automatic transmission can be helpful if you are not used to driving right hand drive vehicles. UK cities suffer from the same problems as all major cities - too much traffic. Generally speaking, Public transport in cities is good, so you can avoid the problems of finding parking, which is difficult in all city centres. Check the parking regulations wherever you park on urban roads, there will usually be a plaque fixed to a post or lamp post telling you how long you can stay. Where you see yellow lines on the kerbs or at the edges of the road, especially the dreaded 'double yellows', go somewhere else, although the restrictions they indicate are sometimes lifted in the evenings (check nearby lamp posts for information). City centre car parks charge high prices for the privelidge of using them. London now charges motorists to take their cars into the centre. Beware of driving in bus lanes in cities, most just operate at peak traffic times, indicated on signs that are easily visible at the side of the road. The rural public transport system is generally poor, infrequent buses, trains that do not run on time and go by inconvenient routes. Hiring a car makes getting around much easier outside of cities.

The 'school run' occurs between 8 and 9 am and again during the mid afternoon, when parents up and down the country dust off their big 4x4 vehicles and clog up the roads near schools as they pick up their offspring.

Speed limits in urban areas are generally 30 mph, with faster speed limits signposted on urban clearways. If there are no signs and the road has lamp posts, the speed limit is 30 mph. In urban areas near schools, the limit is usually dropped to 20 mph when pupils are arriving or departing, but there will be signs telling you of this. Outside of built up areas, the speed limit is 60 mph on single carriageway roads and 70 on dual carriageways and motorways, unless specified as being different. Speed cameras are installed on many roads to catch drivers who do not keep to the limit.

Finding Travel Deals

If your vacation time is coming up and you are planning on making a trip, then you will need to make some plans. Perhaps you are going to visit family? Or, maybe you plan to take your family to see an attraction somewhere? Maybe you are going to visit another country? Regardless of where you plan to go, you can find great deals on getting there, staying there, and even enjoying your time at the location.

Often times we want to take our children to see the things we saw when we were younger. It would be nice to see some new destinations as well. Either way, we want to do a lot but don't always have the funds. So, we are always in search for a deal. There are many out there to be had. Here are some quick ideas.

Saving on airfare is all about shopping around. Compare the different offers each company has. Can you fly in mid week and avoid weekend charges and busy times? Flying at night or at odd times can also increase your changes of getting a deal.

Once you get to your destination, you'll need a place to stay and a car to drive. The best way to get deals on these is to plan ahead. Making reservations ahead of time can be the best way to lower your cost. Cutting out extra charges on things you don't need, or won't use, also helps. No need for that car to come with a DVD player if you only plan to drive short distances. Along the same lines, you probably won't have time to watch all those movies on cable either. Eliminating these extras can lead to extra cash in your pocket.

Saving money on travel doesn't need to stop there. You can save money on travel in just about every aspect by planning and research. Take the time to compare different companies, then choose the best option for you. Also, take a box of cereal and pick up a gallon of milk instead of spending a ton on breakfast. Grab a local newspaper to see if there are deals in there for area restaurants. The local family diner may have some great food at reasonable prices but is overlooked because of all those glaring signs in tourist's face.

Being able to find a deal on travel is a great advantage. Saving some extra cash can truly make your vacation more worthwhile. Since so many people just don't get enough vacation time, getting the most out of what they do get is key. So, take some time and find the best travel deals out there for yourself!

Myrtle Beach Golf Packages - What to Know Before You Go

There is a lot of money in the Myrtle Beach golf package market. Unfortunately, like any other opportunity, this can bring out scam artists and bad business practices.

Don't get stuck with hidden charges on your golf packages. Myrtle Beach discount golf package resellers don't always have your best interest in mind. Here are five things to be aware of before booking your next golf package to Myrtle Beach.

The first two items come in the form of hidden fees. Myrtle Beach is getting a bad reputation among visiting golfers because of these hidden fees and surcharges. This was one of the biggest complaints noted in a recent local newspaper's article.

1) Cart Fees – The golf courses require them. Most golf packages leave them out. Hidden golf cart fees top the list of complaints for most golfers visiting the Grand Strand. Many Myrtle Beach golf package resellers keep the $20 or $30 dollars and pass along the fees to vacationing golfers. Ask up front whether or not cart fees are included. If not, demand it or do your business elsewhere.

2) Course Surcharges – Many golf packages allow golfers to “upgrade” to better courses. This fee is normal in the Myrtle Beach golf market. However, many golf packages up sell visitors on better golf courses. Then, after paying more, the vacationing golfer plays a course that is no better or sometimes worse than the original one. Do your homework before paying a surcharge to play a better golf course.

These next two problems often occur with Myrtle Beach golf package resellers that do not know the local market. Any website can put Myrtle Beach on their logo and sell packages from locations all over the world. Only deal with companies that have local market ties and local market knowledge.

3) Golf Tour – The Grand Strand golf area covers approximately 80 miles. Often these fulfillment centers sell Myrtle Beach golf packages that have you driving more than golfing. They don't care how long the trip is as long as they make an extra profit. Make sure to know the distances between your accommodations and your golf courses on your next golf vacation.

4) Course Conditions – Golf packagers with no local ties do not know what the course conditions are like in Myrtle Beach. These companies rely on dated information and have no idea about yearly maintenance schedules. Getting tee times at a lower rung course is bad enough. Don't compound the problem with horrible course conditions. What is the solution? Contact the Myrtle Beach golf courses yourself and ask them about their maintenance schedule and course conditions. Or, stick with a golf packager that has local market knowledge.

Do you need a golf package? This is definitely something to consider. Myrtle Beach has over 120 golf courses and they are not always sold out.

5) Buyers Market – During some times of the year there are more golf courses than golfers. This gives you an edge. It also gives you a reason to consider booking tee times separately. Summer and winter are slower than spring and fall. However, you can sometimes get a better deal booking tee times yourself even in the busy months. Do your research and investigate options instead of blindly buying golf packages.

Remember, golf deals always look great on paper. If your Myrtle Beach golf package is far below the cost of other deals, don't expect a great golfing experience. Investigate, read the fine print, deal with a company that has local knowledge and ask for customer testimonials. This is the best advice we can give you before you purchase a Myrtle Beach golf package.

Make sure to visit our Myrtle Beach golf section for more great tips and information before booking your next golf vacation. For complete golf package tips and advice visit our Myrtle Beach golf package page. You'll find both at http://www.PerfectGolfVacations.com

Low Airfares

Do you have a trip in mind? Looking for low airfares to get you there? All is not lost. You can find a great deal on airfare if you take the time to look for it. Low airfares are actually quite common right now, due to the sluggish travel industry.

The more open minded you are about your trip, the better your chances are of finding low airfare. Begin your search by deciding what is the most important thing for you. Is it getting there quickly and in one shot? Is there a specific date you must travel? Being open about these things can provide for some great opportunity.

For instance, if you can be more flexible in the date you arrive and return from your destination, perhaps you can find a better rate by flying during the week? Flying out on a Friday is often much more expensive then flying during the week. Also, taking a flight that has a lay over may seem like a big hassle, but it may save you some big bucks.

Of course, you should take the time to compare and contrast what the airlines have to offer. Often times, you can do this right online. There are also travel sites that claim to help you with your travel plans. But, don't just use them. Find the prices for yourself through the airlines as well. Why do this? Well, for one they may get you a good deal, but will their extra fees eat away at this saved money?

The best advice that can be given is to do your research. Find out your options. Most importantly, be as flexible and open as you can. Also, don't forget to ask for a discount. Many times, airlines are not going to give you the lowest airfare unless you ask. Of course, this may take you some extra time, but it may pay off with allowing you to have a little extra cash in your pocket come time for your vacation. That makes it worth it!

So before you book your next airfare, make sure you check out http://www.e-travelpromos.com!

Remember to consider hotel accommodations, airfare or transportation to the location, car rentals, meals, drinks, taxes, tips, and spending money. You may choose to visit a vacation destination where there are a lot of sites to see. Realize that most likely you will need to pay a per person fee to see attractions or to rent equipment. Ormond Beach, FL: A Tiny Piece of Paradise

Within Volusia County, Florida, the small community of Ormond Beach claims the highest standard of living. Since its founding, the town has always been a Mecca for those who were looking for the good things in life.

Founded in the late 1800's, the town was built on the foundation of the rich and famous of the times. Around the turn of the century, notables such as the Rockefellers, the Vanderbilts and the Asters made Ormond Beach their winter getaways.

The first real hotel, The Ormond, became popular not only with the rich but also with creative types; writers and artists have long flocked to the area because of its natural beauty. The town boomed in the 1920s, especially with the rich that the railroad relocated the tracks so that the hotel could have its own platform.

John D. Rockefeller became so enamored with the area; he built the Casements, his winter home. Today it serves as a cultural anchor for all of Ormond Beach.

The town, while upscale and with a typically older population, still boasts several elementary and middle schools, a full array of shopping and entertainment, a municipal airport, a nearby state park and of course the Atlantic Ocean beachfront. The medical facilities offered in either town or the surrounding area covers nearly every specialization of medicine. The unemployment rate is one of the lowest in the state and the crime rate is well below the national average. A perfect bedroom community to Daytona Beach, the town offers everything a family or a retiree could possibly want. Between the beaches, the parks and the golf courses, Ormond Beach offers everything to meet your recreational wants or needs. In addition, of course, the nearby Daytona Speedway is always an attraction.

Near perfect weather year round guarantees the opportunity to take advantage of everything the community has to offer. Move to Ormond Beach and enjoy life!

Five Affordable World Travel Destinations

Locations That Offer More But Cost Less

So you want to travel the world but you have a tight budget? Are you tired of reading about everyone else’s exotic adventures and ready to have some of your own? Have you always wanted to take an international vacation but thought you couldn’t afford it? There are numerous travel destinations across the world that are both exciting and affordable. Five of them are described here to give you ideas and get you started planning your own getaway.
There are two ways to approach affordable vacations to distant destinations. Either you will save money getting there or the savings will occur once you arrive at your selected spot. If you want the trip there to be affordable, many travel consolidators recommend choosing well-known destinations that are served by numerous airlines and receive millions of travelers each year. The competition for customers usually drives costs down for everything from lodging to tour packages. Airfares between major hubs tend to be more affordable and there are often plenty of discounts and last minute travel deals.

London
In Europe, London is a top pick for affordable vacation destinations, for these exact reasons. Not only do you have more flights to choose from, they are cheaper than if you flew to a more remote location. On average, staying in London may be a bit more expensive than other European destinations, but the seemingly endless choices in hotels, restaurants, transportation, tours, and other travel essentials gives travels opportunities to mold their vacation to fit their budgets. And you can use London as your home base to set out on day trips to other more exotic locations or buy a Eurorail pass and see those more remote countries without the expense of flying there.

Playa del Carmen, Mexico
This theory also works well for traveling in the Caribbean. Belize is an appealing destination, with wonderful Caribbean beaches and a lush tropic setting, but since it has only recently emerged as a popular travel destination, it is more expensive than Cancun, Jamaica or other well-traveled locations along the Mayan Riviera. With fewer flights, getting there is more expensive, and there are few moderate lodging options. Development of larger luxury resorts have begun to boom, but the only real alternative for those on a budget is staying in local facilities that may be hard to locate from home and may be more rustic than most travelers are willing to try.

Although there are many options for affordable vacations in the Caribbean, an excellent pick is Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Accessible via flights to Cancun, which are often some of the cheapest in the region, Playa is just a half hour away. It is filled with a multitude of lodging choices, from expansive luxury resorts on the ocean to quaint but clean hotels downtown. From Playa, travelers can branch out and visit Tulum and other locations on the Mayan Riviera or take the ferry across to the island of Cozumel where snorkeling is prime and the attractions are many.

For Asian destinations, travelers often do better to focus on saving money once they get to their destination. Depending on your country of origin, getting to just about any spot in Asia is going to be a sizable chunk of your travel budget. The difference will come from the cost of lodging, food, entertainment and other travel expenditures once you arrive. By choosing destinations where you get the most for your money, you can save a great deal on your international vacation. A drink or dinner in Tokyo will cost you many times more than what it would in Saigon. The key here is to go where your dollars buy you more and where the local cost of living is low.

Tioman Island
An affordable yet exotic choice for Asia is Malaysia and specifically Tioman Island, knows as the mythical 'Bali Hai' from the film 'South Pacific.’ Tioman Island is located at the southern end of the east coast of Malaysia on the South China Sea. Its sandy beaches, bordered by lush jungles and stunning mountains make it a relaxing yet intriguing destination, ideal for sun lovers, snorkelers and divers. The island also has many villages for exploring and shopping. English is widely spoken and the rates are amazingly affordable, with a two night lodging package for a suite at a lovely oceanside resort averaging around 100 U.S. dollars. Typically visitors reach the island via the speed ferry from the mainland. Although the trip can take over two hours, it is enjoyable and provides opportunities for dolphin watching along the way.
Buenos Aires
South America also has many destinations that are affordable because of the savings once you arrive. Locales like Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, the areas top destination, are coming down in price but are still more expensive than cities such as Buenos Aires in Argentina, where the rates are lower and the U.S. dollar goes further.

A huge metropolis that is more European than South American, the city has much to offer including cultural events, thriving nightlife, shopping, local sports, and a host of tours and excursions. La Boca, with its street performers, shops, and unique architecture is a big tourist draw. The large number of choices for lodging, restaurants, and activities provides opportunities for budget travel and savings. Airfare to the city is relatively reasonable for an international destination, with discount fares from the U.S. averaging around $500 round trip. Buenos Aires might not be one of the most exotic or inspiring destinations in South America, but it is a city that everyone should see at least once, and with some of the most affordable rates and fares around, it makes the list as a top South American destination.

Las Vegas
The list would not be complete without a North American destination, and the champ of all affordable locales is Las Vegas. It too is a city that should be seen at least once, and many world travelers return again and again for the gaming, art, shows and people watching that just can’t be found anywhere else. Close enough to other top U.S. attractions like the Grand Canyon, Vegas provides other options for those who have had their fill of casinos.
The city has long been known for its cheap vacation packages with hotels and resorts that offer discount rates for rooms, meals and entertainment in hopes of attracting people to their gaming tables. Airfare rates into Vegas are some of the most reasonable in the United States, no matter the origination destination. And with more than 100,000 hotel rooms to choose from, there is sure to be a lodging choice that fits your budget.

The world provides hundreds of affordable travel destinations. With all the options available, there is no excuse to put off that life-long desire to travel to exotic places at the far ends of the earth. Destinations can be researched on the Internet or your travel consolidator can make recommendations and help with locating discount flights and hotel deals that fit your budget. So what are you waiting for? Get out there and explore the world.

Vacation in comfort with kids

Vacation in comfort with kids
Three strategies to reduce the stress and relax while away from home
By David Leonhardt

It takes a special person to travel with kids – a parent. Children have their own needs. Their idea of a vacation is more "adventurous" than a parent's. They need constant stimulation and they can get as tired as they are tiring.

There are many top ten type lists of tips for traveling with children: how to ensure they eat well and drink enough, how to dress them for weather variances, how to provide the stimulation they need, how to make sure they don't drive off with the family car and leave you stranded in the Mojave Desert, etc.

This list is how to travel in comfort – without tying the children to the roof rack -- which hopefully will reduce your stress.

Make sure you have plenty of room while traveling.

This is easier said than done. On a plane, everybody is cramped. On a train, everybody is cramped, although a little less so. On a bicycle... don't even try it.

If you are driving, get a mini-van. Sure, you might be more of a "car" type, and you might have resisted buying a mini-van so far. But pick up a rental van for the vacation just to give the kids a little more room for fighting. (Make sure it has a roof rack, just in case.)

Reality check: Cram enough people into a tiny space and watch everybody get stressed and enraged. See my humorous but true article on hippo rage: http://www.thehappyguy.com/hippo-rage.html .

Accommodations along the way can be tricky. Usually it involves a cramped motel for just long enough to sleep, then back in the cramped car (or somewhat cramped mini-van). This is not anybody's idea of a home away from home.

An accommodation alternative is to camp. When not sleeping, you have all the space in the world (unless you have to huddle under the tarp while the storm passes through). I love camping, but not everyone enjoys a good early morning wake-up wrestle with a grizzly as much as I do, so a motel might be required.

Make sure you have plenty of room when you "get there".

My childhood vacations, often involved wandering around lost. Assuming you are actually heading for a destination, make sure to have lots of room when you get there. This part is easy. But it requires thinking outside the box. Forget hotels, motels, and inns. Look for private rental homes.

Probably the biggest destination for families is Walt Disney World in Florida. Good news – Orlando, Kissimmee and the surrounding area is just teeming with private vacation homes for rent. In Florida they call them vacation villas, and they offer all the space of home (without having to fix a leaky sink or oil the door hinges or mow the lawn.) Here are some examples of vacation home rentals in the Disney area: http://www.lastminutevillas.net/Disney-vacation.html .

Sharon Baillie is a private villa owner in the Kissimmee area outside Orlando, just a few miles from Disney World. "Our guests enjoy the spaciousness of our 6-bedroom home ( listed at http://www.lastminutevillas.net ). They love the private pool and the private yard in which they can relax," she says. "Parents love the space for children to run around outside, and we leave a box of toys in the garage. So while the parents rest, the children play – and let their parents rest!"

Be prepared for "children being children" events.

Sometimes, stress hits you from behind when the unexpected happens. Like a cut or a scrape ... or a child getting sick. Sharon Baillie told me that is why she tells all her villa rental guests where the first aid kit can be found, and exactly where to go for medical attention. This is particularly helpful for her many guests from abroad who are unfamiliar with the US healthcare system.

She also makes sure her guests are informed about local pollen and viruses in Florida, so that parents can be prepared. Stress is so much more enjoyable when you are prepared for it, don't you think?

Booking tickets to theme parks and making reservations for just about everything in advance, makes the trip less stressful. There is little more difficult than managing young children while trying to get into a theme park or show that requires prior booking.

And to prevent wandering around lost, pick up a AAA Triptik in advance – not that it ever helped us.

Try having your children baby-sat. This might mean bringing along a nanny, such as a grand parent (It's a tough job, but somebody has to do it.). The car might be more crowded, but if you've rented a spacious home for the week, it could just be doable. The other option is to hire a local baby-sitter once or twice. Vacation Home owners can set this up for you, and some hotels might be willing to, too.

When you are single, you can go on adventure vacations. When you are a parent, you get vacation adventures. Here are three of mine: http://www.thehappyguy.com/family-vacation-adventure.html

So there you have it. Three ways to reduce the stress of traveling with kids, so you can actually relax on vacation. After all, isn't that what vacations are supposed to be about?

Romantic Getaway Vacation

When planning your romantic getaway vacation, recognize that part of the romance can be the creativity and excitement of exploring a new place with that special someone. Here are three examples of places that offer a more romantically intimate and private experience, and may be even more rewarding than, say, a vacation to Vegas.

Utah’s Homestead Resort is nestled in quaint and beautiful Heber Valley. The resort’s 154 rooms provide a mixed style of the modern, with nostalgia for the early 1900’s. Within forty-five minutes of tourist hot spots Park City and Sundance, the Homestead experience offers something for everyone: a luxurious 18-hole golf course, scuba diving and swimming in the famous 90 degree mineral water crater, ice and fly-fishing, world-renowned downhill and cross-country skiing, horseback riding, spas, river rafting, snowmobiling, gourmet restaurants, outlet shopping, and boating (not to mention a historic railroad through beautiful Provo canyon, tennis, biking, winter sleigh rides, hot air ballooning, professional theaters, hiking, Timpanogos caves, and Wasatch Mountain State and Uinta National Parks). The Homestead either offers, or is in close proximity to all of that, while still maintaining that intimate, secluded feeling you are looking for. For more information call (800) 327-7220 or visit http://www.homesteadresort.com).
The Cook Islands is the place if you want something more intriguing than the stereotypical Hawaii island vacation. This cluster of fifteen islands is found in the very heart of the South Pacific. The beautiful and friendly Polynesian people of this area (population 14,000) provide an example of a unique culture and language all their own. Explore Polynesian handicrafts, including unique Cook-Island tivaevae quilts, wall hangings, jewelry, handbags, hats, and artifacts made from the beautiful tapa flower.
Its capital, Rarotonga, receives approximately 70,000 visitors a year, but the Cooks are largely unspoiled by tourism. They offer a rare opportunity for people from the cities of the world to experience a different type of vacation, one without tourist traps and giant hotels. With less pampering comes the untouched, empty beaches and a sanctuary of peace away from everything. Surrounded by a gorgeous view of deep blue waters, beautiful coral, narrow lagoons, and a cool ocean breeze, you’ll find yourself exploring, talking, and completely relaxed.

Scotland is rich with history and culture. Ancient castles with Celtic names like Duntulm, Dumbarton, Huntingtower, Doune, and Eilean Donan dot the landscape. With a few in ruins, other castles are still intact and some are even inhabited. Many are situated overlooking the ocean, atop high cliffs—gorgeous and hauntingly beautiful.
You will find that all of Scotland is rich in heritage and lore. Consider a visit to Stirling Castle, for example. It is believed to have been the site of King Arthur’s Camelot. (Mary Queen of Scots also spent much of her childhood in these walls). You will also find yourself in Scotland’s highlands, isles, and towns-- and if the fog is not too thick, you will see rainbows everywhere.
Glasgow Cathedral, built in the thirteenth century, is found in a city brimming with culture and entertainment, and yes…even shopping.
Lodging in Scotland includes incredible options, and is sure to accommodate your romantic style. For a spectacular view, try Mar Hall, a gothic mansion built in the nineteenth century (visit www.marhall.com). For a cozier setting, stay at Portree, located on the Isle of Skye—an old hunting lodge (…roaring fire included). (visit www.cuillinhills.demon.co.uk). Huntingtower Lodge provides culture, with all the comforts of home. This four-star hotel definitely caters to an American taste with a lot of fancy extras, including internet access (visit www.huntingtower.co.uk).

Boston Vacations: Four Ways To Experience Beantown

Boston is a great destination city for a vacation. There’s plenty on tap to see and do, and it’s an easy city to get around on foot. And you’ll find Boston vacations a refreshing mixture of old and new.

You can experience the start of the revolutionary war, take a bus on a river, and see a coral reef – and all before dinner.

The best way of getting around during Boston vacations is walking. That’s right the ole soft shoe shuffle. You’ll save time and see more by expending some shoe leather.

But for first time visitors I highly recommend an orientation tour first.

A SPLISH-SPLASH DUCK TOUR

One of the best, and most unique tours is the Duck Tour ride.

The tour is done in a renovated World War II amphibious vehicle. You get to not only experience Boston from the streets of the city, but also from the Charles River.

That’s right, during the tour, the bus you’re on will become a boat, and you’ll see the beautiful Boston skyline from the river that separates Boston from Cambridge.

You can pick-up and buy tickets for the tour at two places: The Museum of Science, and The Prudential Center in Boston’s Back Bay. During the summer the tours are usually sold out by lunchtime. The tour lasts about 80 minutes, and there’s no stops.

It’s a great tour and you’d have to be “quackers” not to do it! Sorry couldn’t resist it.

THE FREEDOM TRAIL

The Freedom Trail is a 2.5 mile easy-to-follow red brick line that links 16 historical sites together around the streets of Boston. It’s a one-way route starting from Boston Common and ending up at the Bunker Hill monument in Charlestown.

If you do the whole thing, plan on at least 2–3 hours, or better still take the whole day. You’ll pass by many landmarks on your trip, such as: The Boston Common, Boston Massacre Site, Paul Revere’s House, and USS Constitution.

The route takes you through Boston’s famed North End, where you’ll be sure to return during your Boston vacations to sample the superb Italian restaurants.

THE NEW ENGLAND AQUARIUM

As San Diego has its world famous zoo, then Boston has the New England Aquarium.

New England and its coastline have a history of fishing and whaling. But today instead of slaughtering whales, New Englanders spend most of their time saving them.

And the aquarium is a vital link in the area’s ocean preservation movement.

The centerpiece of the aquarium is the giant tank. The floors of the aquarium run around the tank and up four levels. At the top you get to peer down into a coral reef and listen as the staff explain about the tank and the fish that live in it.

You’ll get the answer to questions such as: “Why don’t the big shark fish eat the little tasty fish?” or “How old are those huge sea turtles swimming around down there?”

Your ticket will include a visit to the Discovery next to the main building, where you can see and learn about sea lions during an amazing show. A few years ago the Aquarium opened an IMAX theater that shows a mixture of sea-related and general science films.

A word of warning – this is a favorite Boston vacations attraction for families. But you’ll always get in, even when the ticket line seems to stretch for miles.

BEACON HILL

Sandwiched in a small area between Boston Common, and the Charles River, are alleys and narrow red brick cobbled streets, where time has stood still for the last century.

This is Beacon Hill, and one of the most popular walks for people on their Boston vacations.

Quiet and bewitching, it's a delight to walk. You’ll find walled gardens and an authentic 19th century neighborhood feel. Even the original gas lights remain on streets lined with ancient elms.

A favorite haunt for taking pictures is Louisburg Square. A picturesque block of residences perfectly preserved.

After you ramble up Mount Vernon street, wind your way back across to the Massachusetts State House that sits atop Beacon Hill and get your camera out again.

AND THERE'S MORE…

Three other places to visit on your Boston vacations are Cambridge, just across the Charles River, and home to the universities of Harvard and MIT – THE J.F.K Library and Museum at Columbia Point in South Boston – and the Boston Harbor Islands, tours to the islands leave from Long Wharf and Rowes Wharf, both located near the aquarium.

Boston has tons of things to do and see, and I’ve really just started to scratch the surface for you. The rest is yours to discover and as close as your favorite search engine and booking on the Internet.

Traveling to Europe with your digital camera?

The Vacation Season is fast approaching and naturally you will be taking your digital camera along for the journey. After all your vacations are far and few between and it is nice to look back on those memories as you slave away at your job. However, when you travel with a digital camera, it is a completely different experience from that of traveling with a film camera. This is a lesson that far too many travelers seem to be learning the hard way, especially if you’re traveling to Europe. After a couples years of relying mostly on digital for taking photos when I travel, there are things you should consider before you head off on your next trip.

Charging Batteries is one of the biggest stumbling blocks you'll face when you travel. Outlets can be scarce in hotels. On a recent trip to Europe, only one of the five modern hotels I stayed in had more than one outlet available for use when charging up electronics. Charging your battery can be more of a hassle if you're traveling by train: If you take an overnight train in Europe, they don't have power adapters at the seats (certain trains do, but it's not something you can count on). I suggest bringing at least two rechargeable batteries, three if you plan to travel with overnight trains, or don't think you'll be able to charge every night. If your camera uses regular AA batteries, consider yourself lucky-you'll find those everywhere. Scope out the situation in your room when you check in: You should get at least one usable outlet, but don't count on more than that.

Bring your plugs. Some digital cameras typically come with a power brick that can handle international voltages, so you won't need a voltage adapter. However, you will need a power plug adapter to convert a US outlet plug to the local plug. Most of Europe is on the same outlet now-but not all countries accept the general "Europe" plug. Be sure to research what you'll need to jack in, and try to buy it before you leave (try CompUSA, Radio Shack, Rand McNally, or your local luggage store). If you don't have a chance to get what you need Stateside, don't fret: You should have no trouble finding an outlet converter overseas.

How do I offload my images? For fellow travelers using digicams, this was the number one problem I have heard repeatedly. Many comments from folks traveling for a week or more are: "I'm taking more pictures than I expected to." "I'm not shooting at the best resolution, because I need the room on my memory card." "I'm only halfway through my trip, and I have only 50 shots left." When you travel, odds are you'll take more pictures than you expect to also. A 1 GB card is very useful, and should suffice for low-usage shooters. But for those of us, who can go through a gigabyte or more in a day, not a week? Whether it's because your a high-volume shooter, shooting in RAW format, or a combination of the two. What I discovered is many who had digital SLRs, that had 5 megapixel or more reported they were traveling with a laptop to off load their images. None of these folks were traveling on business, so they didn't need to bring a laptop along. The sad fact is, for now, a laptop remains the most efficient and usable means of off loading images. Epson and Nikon have dedicated handheld units with a hard drive, card reader, and LCD display for copying over and viewing your images. But neither has a full-blown keyboard. If you're first buying a laptop, and intend to travel with it, I suggest going for the smallest one you can. Fujitsu, Panasonic, Sharp, and Sony all have models under four pounds. A laptop provides several additional advantages. For one thing, you can see your pictures on a big screen-to view how you're doing, and if you see any problems you want to correct with your exposure, for example, or if your pictures are being affected by dirt. For another thing, you can properly label your folders, so you know which pictures were taken where. Most newer laptops have integrated memory card readers, but otherwise, you can buy a small external card reader. For the wire-free approach, use a PC Card slot adapter for your memory card; and invest in a 32-bit Cardbus adapter (Delkin and Lexar Media offer these), for speedier transfers. Nothing's worse than coming back to the hotel after a long day of sightseeing, and needing to stay awake another 40 minutes just to off -load two 1 GB cards, at about 20 minutes a pop. If you bring a laptop, I also suggest investing in a portable hard drive. A portable hard drive can serve multiple purposes: It can be a means of backing up your photos on the go; a means of giving you a way to take your photos with you if you have to leave your laptop unattended; and a means of expansion, if you somehow manage to fill up your laptop's built-in hard disk. If you don't want to bring a laptop, and already have an Apple iPod, Belkin sells an attachment for using your iPod with memory cards; or, consider the pricey units from Nikon and Epson. And if you're in a bind, remember you can always buy memory overseas. I was surprised that when I went to Europe, the prices were high, but not so outrageously so that I wouldn't buy another card if I were in a bind. Cards were more readily available, too, than they were when I last traveled through Europe three years ago. Look at it this way: Even if you overpay on the card, you can still reuse it-which beats overpaying for a single use 35mm film cartridge when you were in a bind in years' past.

Be prepared for problems. Things happen when you travel and I've had more things go awry carrying my digital SLR than I have had with my 35mm over the years. Lens paper is always useful to have on hand, but if you have a digital SLR, another supply is absolutely critical: An air blower bulb, to blast out the dust and dirt that will inevitably get trapped inside your camera. I never had problems with my 35mm SLR, but with my digital SLR, I constantly find dirt gets trapped inside, when I change lenses. And there's nothing worse than having a splotch marring your otherwise awesome shots. Finally, remember the philosophy of redundancy. Whether your battery dies and you have no way to charge it, or you run out of space on your memory card(s), and don't want to buy another at a higher-than-usual price, I suggest packing a second camera if you can. A digital point and shoot is a good option but I usually carry a point and shoot 35mm to use if I run into any problems just so I won’t lose any precious pictures.

Online Travel Bargain

Are holiday bargains for true or have catches hidden?

REMEMBER YOUR LAST CONVERSATION WITH THAT family relative who couldn’t talk enough of how much they saved on their last holiday package deal? Or that colleague bragging about his $59 round- trip flight to Las Vegas and his stay in a 5-star hotel at $89 a night? Have you found yourself staring wistfully (and suspiciously) at a $399 package deal for two for Hawaii?

Just because your email seems flooded at times with seemingly impossibly priced travel offers, and you find Internet search engines are flooded with 1000’s of sites selling internet travel besides big hotel brands and branded distribution sites don’t discount them all.

Who can you count on?
Just four or five years ago, when you looked for travel discounts you could choose between a travel agent, the airline offices and the hotels themselves, and maybe, if you were lucky, some travel guru down the street. Today, there’s a massive range of things you can do online, and a lot of them can save significant amounts of money.

The reality is:

• Nine out of 10 online travelers now have some history of shopping for travel online, and nearly 15% of all Americans purchased travel online last year - that’s five times the penetration rate of 1998. (PhoCusWright Consumer Travel Trends Survey)• Nearly one-third of online travel buyers say the Internet was responsible for their travel purchases last year.

• In 1998, six million consumers bought travel online in the U.S. Jump ahead to 2002 when 30 million Americans purchased travel online in the last year. Half of them only buy their travel online. (PhoCusWright Consumer Travel Trends Survey)

• Online travel bookings exceeded $23 billion in 2001, and are expected to reach $63 billion by 2005.

• Internet bookings in the first three quarters of 2002 accounted for over 23% of rooms sold in New York, and over 15% in Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Francisco. Anecdotally, for some properties, hotel managers are reporting Internet bookings ranging from 30% to 50% of all room nights in 2002. (Smith Travel Research and TravelClick)

What does this mean?

This means that online distribution channel is extremely successful in reaching buyers and buyers are finding it more confirmable to shop online. They are seeing a broader range of travel options and variety of products and packages. And its more likely that consumer wants to control that transaction through access to more competitive pricing. Pricing is becoming key factor to determine the sale.

Key factors: Why travelers prefer to book online

• Competitive Price
• Ability to compare product and Prices
• Ability to plan last minute
• Availability of Range of options

Online travel shoppers are not very loyal on where they shop—65 percent of online travelers do not view themselves as brand-loyal. As much as they love to shop online and spend their time researching what suits their needs, they are not loyal to the companies from which they buy.

The above scenario indicated that the travel suppliers have no choice but to participate in this online distribution channel. The suppliers are realizing that the traditional channels like GDS (Global Distribution System)/travel agent and call center/reservation office is somewhat inefficient and expensive, especially when the economy is weak. Ignoring online distribution channel and concentrating only on traditional distribution channels will result in lower occupancy, and higher distribution and operational costs for travel suppliers. As online channels become more popular among suppliers their participation is increasing.

How Pricing and Distribution Become Key

9/11 caused a dramatic shift in how consumers booked their travel. The instability caused a large drop in demand for airlines, hotels and car rentals leading to ever-lower prices. This low demand factor forced travel suppliers to introduce unprecedented discounts. Travel suppliers struggled to sell seats, rooms, car rentals to a significantly shrunk leisure and business travel market. Every air seat, room and auto not booked cost their companies money. Better to sell dirt cheap than not to sell at all. But how to get the word out?

Smart, proactive suppliers adopted the Wal-Mart business model—sell low and distribute inexpensively and efficiently. But how?

The Internet allowed them to reach consumers, sell inventory outstrip their less progressive competition. Those suppliers who had no clear Internet strategy or understanding of how the Web and online distribution works suffered.

Discount hotel sites attract millions of buyers with their special rates leading to stratospheric sales through these channels. They thrive on hoteliers selling their distressed inventory at a fraction of their normal rates. Occupancy is the lowest its been in years, hoteliers continue to work with leading online retailers to move inventory at lower price.

The $6.3 billion in online hotel sales (2002) with are split roughly evenly between discount agency sites and hotel Web sites. PhoCusWright projects that around 75% of discount agency hotel site sales are via the merchant model, where the agency typically takes a 20-30% “margin” on the hotel net rate (instead of the usual 10% commission). This approach has helped profits at Expedia and Hotels.com, who have roughly 60% of online discount agency hotel sales. Travelocity and Orbitz are instituting the same successful approach. Other notable players thriving in this arena are Hotwire.com, http://www.hotels-and-discounts.com , Lodging.com and Travelweb.com.

What is the Future?
Online travel growth will continue to grow in 2003-2005, but it will slow down year by year compared to the record gains see so far. However millions of travelers haven’t yet made their first purchase so the market is not near saturation. Technological improvements will soon make it possible to more easily dynamically package vacation deals including air, hotel and car leading to even lower prices but higher average sales. So growth is projected to come from customers buying more, higher-ticketed products online.

The growth of the online distribution channel will prove beneficial to the end user when the suppler finds it easier and more cost-effective to distribute their inventory there than over the traditional distribution channels. As technology becomes mature in the online distribution sector, it will become more effective and user friendly for the Buyers and thus will attract more Suppliers. Due to its low cost of distribution and emerging ability to package and cross sell inventory, prices will be attractive for years to come, until this channel eventually becomes a commodity.

How to get the cheaper vacations!

Did you know that even the best discount travel sites list prices high above wholesale? Because they need to make a profit, just like everyone else.
So how could you get prices this low, without being a reseller yourself? Without having to BUY the rights to these prices, meaning you pay money before you even buy anything? Travel Packages are quite often a viable answer. Many companies offer these packages at a low rate, offering you tons of vacations for less than the cost of one single trip.

But here's another problem - what if you don't like all of the vacations in the package? Most of them are not transferable. You could re-sell them on online auction sites or similar places, but the best solution is to read the fine print first. If you are going to buy a vacation or travel package, always read the details. They are few and far between, but you CAN find discount vacation packages in which everything is transferable. Meaning you're not paying for anything you don't want - you can give them away as gifts, sell them individually, or - if you own a business - use the unwanted trips as employee incentives. How would you like to get a luxury cruise just for being employee of the month? I know I would like that.
So, as you can see, it is NOT impossible to get cheap, or even FREE vacations. You just have to look! I've done some of the looking for you. Here is one package I purchased (I bought the Level II package) and have never looked back! Check out their website. http://coastalvacations.f2g.net

Why Take A Mediterranean Cruise?

A Mediterranean cruise is without doubt the most
varied type of cruise available. There are more than
120 seaports around the Mediterranean coastline,
offering numerous combinations of cruise vacations
over one-week, two-week or longer trips.

A huge clash of cultures await all who opt for a
Mediterranean cruise. You can visit no less than
17 different countries, including such nations as
Spain, Italy, Greece and Egypt. Each nation has its
own unique attractions, all of which you can sample
as your cruise ship gracefully sails around the calm
blue Mediterranean Sea.

More than 50 companies offer cruises along varied
routes in the Mediterranean. Some companies specialize
in providing Western Mediterranean cruises,
concentrating on ports of call around Portugal,
Spain, France, Italy and Morocco. Other companies
offer Eastern Mediterranean cruises which take in
Croatia, Greece, Turkey and countries in the Middle
East. Popular specialist Mediterranean cruises include
a tour of the North African nations, a Mediterranean
islands cruise that visits the island nations of
Cyprus and Malta, as well as cruises around the Greek
Islands. If you're after a longer vacation, it is
possible to arrange a cruise itinerary that takes
you around most if not all of the Mediterranean
nations.

History, culture, grand cities, ancient monuments,
romantic islands and breathtaking views are all
within easy reach on a Mediterranean cruise. In the
Western Mediterranean you can discover the traditional
white Andalucian villages of Southern Spain, sample
the world-famous Manzanilla sherry in Cadiz and visit
the cultural hub of Europe in the shape of Barcelona,
before travelling onwards to the French Riviera.

A cruise that takes in the wonderful coastline of
Italy yields such treasures as the dormant volcano of
Mt Vesuvius, ancient Pompeii and the stunning city of
Rome. The islands of Sicily and Sardinia hold many
delights too on a Western Mediterranean cruise.

In the Eastern Mediterranean, cruise passengers can
discover the spectacular Croatian coastline and its
beautiful city - Dubrovnik, before diving
southeastwards to sample classical Greece and its
sultry islands. The island of Crete is always worth
a visit, if only for the historic Palace of Knossos.

A visit to the holy city of Jerusalem is a
worthwhile excursion from both Israeli ports -
Haifa and Ashdod - on a Mediterranean cruise of the
Middle East. Egypt's Port Said is well worth a visit
too. Port Said provides access to the world famous
Suez Canal, which takes vessels into the Red Sea and
onwards in to the Arabian Sea.

The Mediterranean region has seen many a civilization
rise and fall. It is a crucible of human evolution
and is rich in relics left over by more than 6,000
years of occupation. If you've ever wanted to discover
what it felt like to be an Egyptian pharaoh, Roman
warrior or a Greek philosopher, a Mediterranean cruise
can give you just that opportunity..

Tips for Taking Better Vacation Photos

Photos are a great way to share your travel experiences with family and friends. Here are a few suggestions to help you capture vacation memories you will treasure for years to come.

PLAN AHEAD
Make sure your digital camera is in good working order before you go, and keep it in a water- and shock-resistant case. Bring two sets of rechargeable batteries and don’t forget the charger and relevant cords. Make sure your camera has enough memory. Packing an extra memory card is wise, as there is nothing worse than running out of room for pictures halfway down the Grand Canyon. It may be tempting to lower the resolution so you can store more pictures, but you will regret this later as it may result in poorer quality prints, or you will be limited to smaller size prints. Set your camera at its highest quality JPEG setting and get more memory if you have to. You will appreciate this when you’re viewing and printing your photos after your trip.

TAKE LOTS AND LOTS OF PICTURES.
With a digital camera you can always erase the photos you don’t want. Take pictures of anything you find interesting and try to focus on some of the details such as an attractive doorway or a colorful market, not just panoramic scenes or major landmarks. Let your pictures tell a story by creating a visual diary of your trip. Include street scenes, interesting signs, people you see along the way. For variety take both vertical and horizontal pictures.

READY FOR YOUR CLOSE-UP?
When taking people shots, don’t make the mistake of standing too far away. You want to be able to recognize the people in your photos. Get close enough so you can see the expressions on your subjects faces. Zoom in on individuals or capture them from the waist up. Pictures are often more interesting when you can catch people at candid, un-posed moments. In posed photos, try to incorporate some of the background into your shot. Try snapping from interesting angles rather than simply head-on.

USE YOUR FLASH
When photographing in bright sunlight, setting your camera’s “fill” or “forced” flash is very helpful, particularly when photographing people. Brilliant sunlight often makes people's faces look harsh, casting dark shadows under the eyes and accentuating wrinkles. The daytime fill-in flash will soften the lighting and make the images more flattering. Your family and friends in the photos will thank you!

EDIT AND ENHANCE YOUR FAVORITE SHOTS
When you get home you can edit, crop and enhance your favorites using photo editing software such as Foto Finish, Ulead or Photoshop Elements. Consider adding drama to your images by turning some of your color photos into black and white or sepia tones and then upload all your images to an online photo printing service like Ofoto or Shutterfly for fast and convenient prints. You can take your best snaps and use your photo editing software to create a photo calendar or make photo cards for personal notes, or to email your favorites to family and friends.

Most of all have fun with your camera!

A confident mix of old and new, Amsterdam, capital city of The Netherlands, features beautiful 17th- and 18th-century buildings and boasts some world-class museums, most notably the Van Gogh Museum, and the Rijksmuseum, home to some of the world’s finest artworks, including those by famous Dutch artist Rembrandt. Nightlife in Amsterdam is as mixed as the city itself, with something for everyone’s tastes available. A trip to Amsterdam would not be complete without renting a bicycle (Holland has more bicycles than residents), or cruising down the canals by boat.

Barcelona
Barcelona is the Mediterranean metropolis of excellence and yet at the same time open to all cultural influences flowing in from beyond the Pyrenees. Its well-ordered and proportioned town grid has given it quarters of unrivalled beauty, such as the Gothic Quarter, Las Ramblas and the modernist Paseo de Gracia.

Brussels
The capital of Belgium, Brussels, is a cosmopolitan city, with liveliness and an appeal that are intimately related to its role as a crossroads for all of Europe. The many aspects of Brussels are expressed in the four quarters of the city. The Lower Town, which extends from Manneken Pis via the Grand Place to the Botanique. The Royal District in the Upper Town occupies the area between the Warande and the Palace of Justice. In the North of the city lies the Heizel with the Atomium and Bruparck. Just outside the city centre visitors will find the Cinquantenaire park and the European District facet.

The river Seine bisects the city, the Right Bank is home to the grand boulevards and most monumental buildings, many dating from Haussmann's nineteenth-century redevelopment. The Left Bank has a noticeably different feel, it has an atmosphere of Bohemian, dissident, intellectual connotations, and it shows in Paris' best range of bars and restaurants. The Eiffel Tower is Paris’ most famous and instantly recognizable landmark. The Champs-Elysees is the city’s most well-known boulevard. Elegant and broad, it links Place de la Concorde with the Arc de Triomphe.

Prague
The capital Prague, largest city of the Czech Republic, and former capital of Czechoslovakia, is located on both banks of the Vltava River. Prague is unquestionably a city best explored on foot, the entire central area has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city centre is like an enormous open-air museum with an interesting mix of architectural innovation including Renaissance, Baroque, Gothic, Romanesque, Cubist and Art Nouveau styles.

Stockholm
Visitors can experience the magic of age-old traditions, historical sites and breathtaking settings in practically every part of this unique country. The most popular tourist destination is the Swedish capital, Stockholm. The grand old city by the water is known for its unique wonders such as the Vasa Ship; its elegance and grandeur, typified by the Royal Palace and surrounds, and its wonderfully preserved Old Town, "Gamla Stan", with 13th-century roots, subterranean vaults, church spires and narrow, cobbled laneways.

Vienna
Located on a plain bordered by the Wienerwald and the Carpathian foothills, the Austrian capital, Vienna, is a cultural, industrial, commercial, and transportation centre. Vienna owes its spectacular architectural heritage to the Habsburg dynasty that controlled much of Europe for 600 years. Of special interest are the Hofburg, or Imperial Palace, with it's 14th century Augustinian church, Imperial Apartments and Royal Chapel where the Vienna Boy's Choir sing. Many of the world's most important composers including Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, Strauss and Mahler have lived and performed behind Vienna's Baroque facades.
